perhaps because the brain's contour-detecting cells are partly color-blind.

Perception Illusion
Your peripheral vision is responsible for a large percentage of your sight and allows humans to have a field of view
that is about 220° horizontally and 170° vertically. It is, however, imperfect, and can cause us to think that we
see things that aren't really there.
After reading through this information click on the image to get to the quickly changing celebrity faces. Stare at
the cross in the center of the image.
Your peripheral vision is weird. Watch what happens to these famous faces.
These very recognizable and famous faces start to distort and morph. The longer you look at them, the more distorted they become.
So what is happening? The morphing is the flaws of your peripheral vision coming out. Your main field of vision contains the
thing you are focused on and is where the best cones and receptors are in your eyes. This field accounts for only between
about 10% of your range of vision with three fields of peripheral vision adding up to the 220°. Using those peripheral fields,
your brain is being selective and is juxtaposing certain aspects and features from the faces on the left with the faces on
the right to create a cohesive image. When you stare at the center, you are forcing your brain to work harder to decipher what
it is seeing because all of the main information is outside of that main focal range.
The peripherals are brought in to accompany that main image and have less dense receptors so their ability
to see shapes and colors are not as good. They are good at detecting motion, especially at night, and add depth and detail
to our sight. They allow us to see our desk or the surrounding walls without having to focus on them and are very useful
for identifying familiar forms. When your main field of vision is empty (as is the case of the black area with the cross)
all the information you are trying to process comes from those less dense receptors. They aren't as good at picking up
information and your brain is trying to put them both together to form one image that you see. Unfortunately for your brain,
that is very difficult to do. So your facial recognition begins to kick in and it combines facial features together rather
than whole faces. Your brain is trying to process the two images quickly enough before the next two sets of photos arrive
with more information to process.
