One of the hotter debates going on in eyecare today is the compatibility of soft contact lens materials with the myriad of contact lens solutions available. Much research is being devoted to this topic. Additionally, concerns over the best product to fill the bowl of the rigid scleral lens still continues. Information for both the soft lens solutions and the scleral lens solutions are below.

Solution and Soft Lens Compatibility

The Staining Grid is an easy-to-use reference tool showing the level of biocompatibility of various contact lens/multipurpose solutions. It appears as a "grid" with the solutions listed across the top and the lens materials in the first column. The percentages which appear in each cell represent the average percentage of the cornea which was stained 2 hours after lens/solution insertion. To choose a biocompatible multipurpose solution for a particular lens brand:
1) Find the lens material (if it has been tested) in the first column of the grid.
2) Follow across that row and select a solution which results in minimal corneal staining (i.e., green zone).

Ignorance Is Not Bliss

"... changing without warning"

Additionally, the unsuspecting contact lens wearer may be susceptible to the generic solutions fluid in the bottle changing without warning. Between 2002 and 2007, three of the largest mass merchandisers and five of the largest drug store chains all changed the formula of their private label multipurpose solutions at least twice.
