Thank you very much for taking the time to sign up for the No Blur! EyeMail Newsletter. The No Blur! EyeMail Newsletter is sent out approximately four times per year. This installment of the No Blur! EyeMail comes with an announcement. I have been elected to the Board of Trustees
for The Surgical Eyes Foundation. In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees, I will also be taking
over the position of Optometry Director which was a position previously held by Gregg Russell, O.D. To those of
you who are unfamiliar with The Surgical Eyes Foundation, it is an non-profit organization devoted to the
rehabilitation of those injured by refractive surgery. The people that have been helped by this foundation have
ranged from those that have had some slight visual disturbances to those who have had their lives devasted by
surgery. Many doctors have devoted countless time and efforts on a volunteer basis to aid these post refractive
surgical casualties. I believe strongly in the mission of the Foundation and as Optometry Director I already
have some plans in progress for furthering the mission of The Surgical Eyes Foundation. If you have never
visited the website, it is located at http://www.surgicaleyes.org
It is currently under an overhaul, so look forward to the new website shortly. If you know of anyone who has
had problems after a refractive surgical procedure, please pass this along to them as it is an invaluble resource
for their rehabilitation.

In a recent report a 77-year-old woman sustained significant eye injury from the combination of chemical and thermal burns from microwave- heated Vicks Vaporub. The injuries included enough damage to her eyes that she required a corneal transplant, cataract surgery and treatment for glaucoma. Superheated liquids by microwave are certainly more common these days and education of the public to these dangers is paramount to avoiding disaster. Please use care with these microwave superheated liquids and share this information with the people around you.
In a recent animal study done at the Denmark Aarhus University Hospital, it was found that plastic particles that are generated from the oscillation of the microkeratome blade during Lasik surgery deposit at the Lasik interface and persist unaltered for at least one year. The highest concentration of particles was where the blade met the cornea at the flap edge. During the course of the one year study, these particles remained as they were immediately after surgery. There was no speculation as to any impact that these plastic particles might have on the short or long-term health of the cornea or if there was any impact on vision.
From Essilor of America, the Varilux Ellipse has just been introduced into the optical market. This is an new design progressive spectacle lens that allows a much shorter fitting segment height. What this means is that now, with even the smaller currently stylish frames that are on the market, it is possible to fit a progressive lens successfully. The fact that very small style frames are currently in fashion as been a real problem for people that wanted fashion along with function. This should be a very nice addition to meet people's visual needs.
There is a very valuable resource on the web at (No Longer Available) http://www.kcenter.org If you have keratoconus or know someone who suffers from this condition, please pass this resource onto them. Keratoconus is not very well understood by the general public and often these people suffer from more than just the visual problems. If you do not know what Keratoconus is and you are interested, you can read a bit about it at my website at http://www.noblur.com/kerat.html and certainly more information is available at the (No Longer Available)kcenter_org
In a recent study, laboratory rats with induced glaucoma were tested by using Ginkgo Biloba Extract (EGb 761) for both pre-treatment as well as early post-treatment. The researchers found that the damage from glaucoma was significantly less in the eyes of the treated rats. This conclusion of the study was that the Gingko Biloba Extract is an effective protector of the neural tissue within the glaucoma affected eye. This may be another treatment added to the treatments already available to control glaucoma.
Sometimes while on the web, I will come across some item that is just fun. I have incorporated this into the website because everyone should have a little fun occasionally. I have decided to put at least one "fun" thing into each newsletter. I hope that you enjoy it. This particular item is a neat program from David Copperfield, the magician. He will perform a rather cool card trick for you. You can find it at the David Copperfield Illusion.
