EyePrintPro (EPP) is a contact lens system intended to aid Dr. Maller in addressing the significant vision problems associated with certain ocular diseases and very complex corneal irregularities. EyePrintPro (EPP) is comprised of the following: an impression mold, scanning hardware and software, a computer with very sophisticated processing and editing software that allows manipulation for lens designing in three dimensional space, a state-of-the-art computer controlled manufacturing lathe, and a very adept contact lens finishing laboratory. This combined with Dr. Maller's experience of more than thirty five years with traditional rigid contact lens fitting and well over twenty five years of experience using three dimensional complex lens designing software for corneal and scleral lenses, makes this a very powerful system to address very difficult ocular situations. Since computers and technology continue to advance very rapidly, EyePrintPro (EPP) is also a work in progress that continues to improve.
Eye Print Prosthetics (EyePrintPro EPP) is intended to address the most severe of corneal irregularities and complex ocular pathologies. This technology also can provide a solution for eyes that have failed with even the most customized scleral lens designs. These irregularities can be from a variety of causes. Among the causes leading to these corneal irregularities, are many of the refractive surgery procedures, i.e. RK, LASIK, etc. People who have had a refractive surgery procedure may now be dealing with many different types of visual distortions. The symptoms can be blur, glare, ghosting, multiple images, poor contrast, halos, starbursts, spikes, etc. Another source of these irregularities can be corneal transplants, which will also result in very distorted vision. Trauma or infections can sometimes leave scars in the cornea also causing these irregularities. Certain degenerative conditions such as Keratoconus or Pellucid Marginal Degeneration can cause very poor vision due to the unusual shapes forced upon the cornea. All of these types of corneal conditions have traditionally been the most difficult group of conditions to properly restore 'functional normal' vision. Individuals who suffer with any of the aforementioned conditions would find the most benefit in EyePrintPro.
Using very complex mathematics, the ocular surface data is gathered from the impression mold containing over one million data points, and turned into a lens surface that can mimic in incredible detail, the complex ocular surface of the underlying compromised eye. Manufacturing this lens product is done on sophisticated computer controlled lathes to produce a totally unique product that has been guided by the eye that will be wearing this lens. This is the first time in history that this level of precision measurement and manufacturing has been possible to achieve. Additionally, very complex optics such as higher order aberration, decentration of the optical centers, multifocal, and prism, can all be added into this lens design thus addressing often optical performance problems not possible to resolve through any other available means.
The EyePrintPro process starts with corneal and scleral data capture through impression molding. A special compound has been formulated specifically for this process. When the impression mold is ready to be taken, two fluid compounds are mixed together into a bowl-shaped tray to form the material that will be used to take the impression (the blue goo). This material begins to firm up and is placed on the eye to continue to solidify into a somewhat flexible rubber-like compound that is capable of capturing all of the nuances of the ocular surface. While it is on the eye the sensation is typically described as cool and wet so not only is there no pain or even discomfort during this process, but many patients have reported relief of their sandy or gritty feeling dry eyes. The compound is removed from the eye's surface and verified that the mold is of good quality. This mold is then scanned by a three dimensional scanner to create a digital file used to control a computer driven lathe that can transfer all of the unique collected data into a manufactured lens. Since your eye was the guide, the resulting one-of-a-kind contact lens will now fit very well and therefore be comfortable, stable and healthy. Through the use of complex calculations, the "proper neutralizing prescription" can then be made onto the front surface of the contact lens thus providing clear vision. This manufactured contact lens is a unique and specific customized product for your eye. Prior to its manufacture, this specific lens has never existed before nor will it ever exist again unless an exact duplicate were required for your eye. This very powerful tool has allowed the restoration of vision on eyes that previously were impossible to address.
Many people with complex eye problems from diseases like Keratoconus or Pellucids Marginal Degneration, Post-Refractive Surgical Ectasia, Infectious Sequelae such as the aftermath of a severe Herpetic Corneal infection, Traumatic injuries, the very difficult optical problems that can be the result of Corneal Transplantation surgeries, and many other complicated situations, have had their visual function restored by this technology.
