After speaking with many patients, several requested that I set up a place where they could tell their stories. I have set aside this area so that their stories, in their own words would be relayed to the world. The following are the patients' unedited comments. In addition, several of these patients have included their email address so that should you have questions/concerns/etc. and would like to get their perspectives and experiences, you can send these requests directly to them. They truly understand what it is like to be in a similar position as yourself and are eager to help in any way they can. I hope that you find this patient perspectives area useful.

Isaiah (Written by Glenna, his grandmother) Part 2 - (5 years later)

Orthokeratology - High Myopia, Myopia Control

Well, it's been over five years since we began the Ortho-k for Isaiah's eyes and we happily continue with it today. I can't believe Isaiah was in kindergarten when we first starting seeing Dr. Maller and started doing the Ortho-k. He is now in the fifth grade! Time has flown so quickly!

I meant to give periodic updates in a timely manner ,but the truth of the matter is, I don't even think much about Isiah's eyes any more. I certainly don't worry about them. When Isaiah wore glasses I used to constantly worry about his vision and fret over the future of the health of his eyes. (And if you read our story above, I'm sure you will agree it was for good reason. His myopia was progressing very quickly and his vision was getting worse and worse on a monthly basis) Well, I am ecstatic to report to you that in the five years that Isaiah has been treated by Dr. Maller and wearing the Ortho-k lenses, his myopia has not progressed. It is stabilized! What makes this even more amazing is that in this period of time he has experienced rapid physical growth. He went from a little kindergartner to a big fifth grader who now stands about five foot six inches tall!

We have had no problems or complications. I know they always say infection is a possibility with any kind of contact lens but we have not had one single infection. Isaiah can now put the lenses in himself but we still kind of supervise as we don't want him taking shortcuts with hand washing or any other part of the process. ( He's all boy and not very much into strict cleanliness! ) But I know there are lots of kids , many younger than Isaiah, that do the entire process unsupervised with good success. Every child is different but I must tell you, either way, the process is simple, quick, and just a real no-brainer.

Isaiah is seeing better than he ever has and absolutely much better than he ever did with glasses. His vision in his left eye is 20/25 and in his right eye is 20/30. With his glasses he only saw 20/60 with each eye.

I am so grateful to Dr. Maller for his incredible skills and expertise with Ortho-K and so thankful that we were able to find him. I shudder to think how severe his myopia would be now, if we had continued with the glasses recommended by the pediatric ophthalmologist we initially went to.

If you have any questions or want further information about our experience with Ortho-k and/or Dr. Maller, please contact me. I would love for others to benefit from this as much as we have.

Thank you.
